Welcome to STEPS

STEPS - A Systems Approach to Tissue Engineering Processes and Products-  is an Itegrated Project under the FP6 aiming to successfully implement TE, systematically linking together all aspects of this multi-disciplinary process by applying the logistics of systems engineering, providing a totally new infrastructure.

Specifically, the technological components will include cell sourcing and manipulation, novel biomaterial development, bioreactor design and the integration of TE constructs into the living host.

The programme incorporates a determination of the socio-economic issues related to ethics and health economics and engages itself in developments across four TE tissues: SKIN, CARTILAGEBONE and VISCERAL.

TISSUE ENGINEERING

Tissue Engineering (TE) is a rapidly emerging collection of technologies aimed at the regeneration of tissues and organs for the treatment of disease and injury.

TE is based upon scaffold-guided tissue regeneration, and involves the seeding of porous, biodegradable scaffolds with donor cells, the culture of the resulting biohybrid construct in vitro with or without the use of growth factors and finally the implant of the construct into the patient to induce and direct the growth of new healthy tissue.

AREA OF APPLICATION

STEPS address the european research across 4 tissues engineered:

   -      VISCERAL WALLS

   -      BONE

   -     CARTILAGE

   -     SKIN
